Hawks Nest State Park

49 Hawks Nest Park Road

Nestled in the heart of whitewater rafting country, Hawks Nest State Park encompasses 276 acres bordering a rugged section of the New River Gorge National River and known for the panoramic views.  The New River was designated an American Heritage River on July 30, 1998. There are currently fourteen American Heritage Rivers in the country.

The name of this area comes from the numerous osprey (some call them, “fish hawks”) that once nested on the cliffs.  Today, many hawks, turkey vultures,, black vultures and the occasional bald and golden eagles are seen soaring above the canyon. Additionally,  peregrine falcons study within New River Gorge National River has been part of a restoration program for the species.

Below the 31-room lodge, built in 1967, the New River forms peaceful Hawks Nest Lake. Above the lake, the narrow canyon and rushing water create one of the most challenging whitewater boating waterways in the nation.

Hawks Nest State Park has welcomed visitors since the mid-1930s.

I am always amazed by the breathtaking beauty the mountains of West Virginia hold. From raging rapids to snow capped peaks, this marvel is ripe with adventure. In the southern half of the state things are more "back to nature". You can escape the insanity of modern life and unwind in the cradle of nature. Majestic things abound in the wilderness, come explore with us!!!

Overpriced meals and rooms. In huge need of an upgrade. Certain rooms you have to walk up and down stairs. Although the rooms were clean as well as the shower and they did have a nice gift shop. I would probably go back.

The Hawk's Nest State Park Lodge is located here and is a good spot to stay if your in the area site seeing. There are lots to do around here and nice views of the New River Gorge from the Lodge itself. There is big back deck where the Aerial Tram is located which you can ride to the New River below. There is a nice little Gift Store there as well with lots of souvenirs to chose from. Around the bend heading on down Rt60 is another Overlook, Picnic Shelter, and Gift Shop... worth the stop for day trips or picnic lunches. Check my G+ or FB Picture Albums/Posts for more

Beautiful and classic. Definitely not a modern lodge whatsoever, so don't come here expecting that. It has the appearance of on the edge of run down, especially in the off season, but that kind of contributes to the earthy, nature-takes-over vibe it has. The silence floods your ears with the sounds of the unseen waterfall and calls of birds and insects. Quite peaceful and relaxing
