Alcatraz Island (San Francisco Bay) - A short ferry ride into the San Francisco Bay will take you to Alcatraz Island. The history of Alcatraz is surprising to many. It was a Civil War fortress, an infamous federal penitentiary (closed in 1963), a bird sanctuary and the first lighthouse on the West Coast. The tour of the prison is a highlight of Bay Area attractions!  In addition to the historical significance, there is also a natural side to "the Rock," where you'll find gardens, tide pools, bird colonies and incomparable bay views. It is now a sanctuary for seabirds and is a premier spot for viewing cormorants, pigeon guillemots, snowy egrets and black-crowned night herons.

This is an amazing piece of history, a great island that is easy to walk even for elderly and it has scenic views to the skyline of San Francisco and the Golden gate Bridge. Buy tickets online beforehand. You might otherwise not be able to see this jewel.

Taking a tour of Alcatraz is a very cool experience. I believe the tickets go on sale 90 days before the tour date. If you wait to buy your tickets they will be sold out. Definitely go on the night tour. I've done day and night. The night is better. There are fewer people and the island has a creepier vibe at night. Dress in layers. The island is cold and windy at night.

So great. The included self-guided audio tour is amazing. Went on a weekday during shoulder season and it was still mobbed. Process to pick up audio tour is frustrating, slow, but needlessly so. Unforgettable experience, unlike any other tourist activity anywhere.

When I visited it was during a storm so not the nicest weather to be on an island! It was cold and windy. However, I joined a free Garden tour and it was so awesome it actually made the trip better. The volunteers were very knowledgeable and the tour showed you areas that you are closed from the general public. As for the prison itself, there's a free audio guided tour that you get from a headset. It is very informative. I would suggest visiting during the spring/fall.
